Review of Canidae Dog Food

Canidae dog food was created to give pet owners an all-natural, healthy way to feed their pets.

The company is big on responsible pet ownership and offers owner education along with its food varieties. A win-win for dog owners.

Canidae boasts that its varieties of dog foods are made with all-natural, hormone-free meats, veggies and vitamins. Does it live up to their hype?

Absolutely: The first three ingredients are protein-rich chicken meal, turkey meal and lamb meal. Other main ingredients in the food brown rice, white rice, rice bran, protein-rich peas, potato, oatmeal, barley and chicken fat. Uh, yum: Can we eat this? Just kidding. Maybe.

The food also contains probiotics and chelated minerals to help aid in digestion. No constipated doggies here!

However, two ingredients way down on the list are concerning for dog food purists: Tomato pomace and ocean fish meal. Tomato pomace is full of fiber and nutritional content, but there's concern that it gives animals pesticides. Ocean fishmeal sounds healthy, but it doesn't really describe what's in it: Which fish are used - and which parts?

However, Canidae is reportedly ethoxyquin-free, so that's a plus.

Canidae offers nine different varieties of dog food, including four grain-free formulas, four meat-filled varieties and one single-grain, protein-fortified flavor. The food is designed to provide nutrition to dogs throughout their lives, so no specific formulas for puppies or senior dogs. Each formula comes in a dry and wet variety.

Canidae sounds like it would cost an arm and a leg for a small bag, but varieties are priced similarly to other premium dog foods - starting under $20 and topping out about $50. The problem: It's not available in as many retailers as other premium brands. You can opt to buy it online, or use the retail locator on the Canidae website to find a seller near you.

The Canidae website also boasts a fun, easy-to-use calculator that shows you just how much it costs to feed your pup the brand. The reason for this calculator? To show the doubters that it doesn't cost all that much more to feed dogs a healthy, balanced diet. No more excuses!

Like all dog foods, Canidae is made in a production facility - and those facilities pose dangers that cause recalls. The brand issued such a recall on May 4, 2012 for the following dry formulas: * Canidae Platinum Dry Dog Food * Canidae All Life Stages Dry Dog Food* Canidae Lamb Meal & Rice Dry Dog Food* Canidae Chicken Meal & Rice Dry Dog Food.

Possible salmonella contamination was cited as the reason for the recall. It's good to see a company move quickly to deal with any potential health risks.

Overall, Canidae is a tasty and nutritious food that will keep your canine best friend healthy and full of energy. Try it out and see the benefits for yourself.
